PYREARCHON — ENTITY

Illustration in progress

Salorras entity: pyrearchon — a fiery outsider of the Continuum Ylaana, formed from the ashes of vanished phoenixes; the being two pyrekin twins become through Pyrearchon Fusion. A 5e monster stat block (CR 13 representative form) with scaling notes for the lesser and greater pyrearchons summoned by the pyrekin’s Pyrearchon Fusion trait.

Pyrearchons are powerful inhabitants of the Continuum of Ylaana, beings made from the ashes of vanished phoenixes who carry the gift of fire and magic. Eternal watchers of Salorras, they wait for the chance to “cleanse” the greedy wielders of entropic magic, for it is said that with its use the Continuum Dysis — where all the spells of the world are woven — frays ever more. Many inhabitants of Salorras, especially the pyrekin, reckon them the angelic punishers of the goddess Orya.

A pyrearchon looks like a slender humanoid with semi-transparent, burning skin and a featureless face save for two flaming sockets; jets of fire erupt at random across a body that ranges from deep red to ultraviolet, and two scythe-like stings rise from its back. Its caustic heat thins the air and leaves a smell of sulfur. They are charismatic and intelligent, their wisdom grounded in magic, and the quintessence of the phoenix has lent them a real measure of mercy — but the chaotic nature of fire makes them unpredictable, and a pyrearchon whose patience runs out may turn even on an ally.

Healing Fire. Whenever the pyrearchon is subjected to Fire damage, it takes no damage and instead regains a number of Hit Points equal to half the Fire damage dealt.

Heat. A creature that touches the pyrearchon or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 7 (2d6) Fire damage. A creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of the pyrearchon takes 7 (2d6) Fire damage.

Magic Resistance. The pyrearchon has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Regeneration. The pyrearchon regains 10 Hit Points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 Hit Point.

Magic Weapons. The pyrearchon’s weapon attacks are magical.

Actions

Multiattack. The pyrearchon makes two Claw attacks and one Sting attack, or it casts a spell.

Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +10, reach 10 ft. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) Slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) Fire damage (the Burst).

Sting. Melee Attack Roll: +10, reach 10 ft. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 5) Piercing damage, and the target makes a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, it takes 9 (2d6) Poison damage and has Disadvantage on Strength-based attack rolls, checks, and saving throws until the end of its next turn.

Torrid Gaze (Recharge 5–6). The pyrearchon fixes its empty sockets on one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target makes a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, it has the Blinded condition until the end of the pyrearchon’s next turn.

Spellcasting (Innate). The pyrearchon casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks):

  • At Will: Detect Magic, Fire Bolt (3d10 Fire)
  • 3/Day Each: Scorching Ray, Fireball, Haste
  • 1/Day Each: Wall of Fire, Dimension Door, Sunburst

On Death

Death Throes. When the pyrearchon dies, it erupts in a blinding burst of fire. Each creature within 20 feet makes a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) Fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced to 0 Hit Points by this burst is consumed to ash and can be restored to life only by a Wish spell. The pyrearchon’s remains then return to the Continuum of Ylaana.

Scaling the Pyrearchon (Pyrearchon Fusion)

When two pyrekin twins use Pyrearchon Fusion, the form they take is a pyrearchon scaled to their power. The CR 13 stat block above is the standard form; for lower- or higher-tier play, adjust as follows:

  • Lesser Pyrearchon (≈ CR 6). AC 15; HP 105 (14d8 + 42); STR 16 (+3), CON 16 (+3), CHA 18 (+4); attacks +6 to hit, Burst and Heat deal 1d6 Fire; spell save DC 14; Torrid Gaze and Sting DC 14; Death Throes 18 (4d8) Fire; loses Sunburst, Wall of Fire, and Dimension Door. Use for a fusion by lower-level pyrekin.
  • Great Pyrearchon (≈ CR 17). AC 18; HP 248 (16d12 + 144); STR 24 (+7), CON 24 (+7), CHA 26 (+8); attacks +13 to hit, Burst and Heat deal 3d6 Fire; spell save DC 20; adds Meteor Swarm (1/day) and a third Claw to its Multiattack; Death Throes 52 (15d6) Fire. Use for a fusion by high-level pyrekin twins in perfect harmony.

While fused, the two pyrekin act as a single dual-minded creature using the appropriate stat block; the form lasts up to 1 minute and, when it ends or drops to 0 Hit Points, triggers the Death Throes before the twins reform (or, if the pyrearchon was slain, leaves only ash). The more harmonized the twins, the longer and mightier the fusion.
