APOSTLE — CLERIC

Apostle — Cleric

Salorras Path: Apostle · OSE class: Cleric The apostle is Salorras’s vessel of divine power — the priest, oracle, and holy warrior who channels the will of a god or cosmic force into the world. In OSE terms the apostle is the Cleric class, exactly as printed. The elite holy traditions (Warrior of Eone, Murder-Call Apostle, Magewraith, Omenar) are separate Paragon classes, chosen at character creation with the character’s consecration woven into their background.

This file is a self-contained OSE reference. Mechanics follow the standard Old-School Essentials Cleric; only the framing is Salorras-specific.

Class Overview

Requirements: None Prime requisite: WIS Hit Dice: 1d6 Maximum level: 14 Armour: Any, including shields Weapons: Blunt weapons only Languages: Alignment, Colloquial

Apostles are adventurers sworn to a god of the Salorras pantheon, crusading in that god’s name and wielding the divine power entrusted to them. They march with Eone’s Host, carry the word of the Ominous Three for the Threefold Testament, walk the wind-roads with the Ashwind Missionaries, or serve their god alone, wherever the faith is needed. The edicts of their holy orders forbid weapons with a sharp, cutting edge or stabbing point — the apostle fights with club, mace, sling, staff, or war hammer.

A prime requisite of WIS 13–15 grants +5% to experience earned; WIS 16–18 grants +10%. (Low Wisdom penalizes experience per the standard prime-requisite rules: WIS 3–5 −20%, WIS 6–8 −10%.)

Class Abilities

Combat. Apostles can use all types of armour, including shields, but may wield only blunt weapons (e.g. club, mace, sling, staff, war hammer).

Divine Magic. An apostle carries a holy symbol of their god and casts divine spells from 2nd level onward, chosen from the standard OSE cleric spell list and regained through prayer. Deity disfavour: apostles must be faithful to the tenets of their alignment, clergy, and religion; an apostle who falls from their god’s favour may incur penalties — impaired spell casting, quests of penance, or worse — at the referee’s discretion, until proper atonement is made. Magical research: an apostle of any level may spend time and money researching new spells or other magical effects associated with their deity; from 9th level they may also create magic items. Apostles can use divine magic scrolls and items usable by divine spell casters.

Turning the Undead. Apostles can invoke their god’s power to repel the undead. The player rolls 2d6 and consults the table below, cross-referencing the apostle’s level against the Hit Dice of the undead (the 2★ column covers 2 HD undead with a special ability):

Apostle Level122★34567–9

5DDTT7911
6DDDTT7911
7DDDDTT79
8DDDDDTT7
9DDDDDDTT
10DDDDDDDT
11+DDDDDDDD

A number means the attempt succeeds if the 2d6 roll is greater than or equal to it; T means it automatically succeeds; D means it succeeds and the undead are destroyed outright; means it fails. On a success, roll 2d6 for the total Hit Dice of undead turned (or destroyed) — at least one creature is always affected — with lower-HD undead affected first in mixed groups. Turned undead flee the apostle’s presence.

Stronghold — After Reaching 9th Level. An apostle who has proven their faith may establish a temple-stronghold; so long as the apostle remains in their god’s favour, the construction is blessed and costs half the normal price. Once it is complete, 5d6 × 10 fighters of level 1–2 arrive to serve the apostle as a completely devoted holy retinue, never checking morale.

The Gods of Salorras

An apostle’s power flows from the god (or cosmic force) they serve. OSE keys the cleric to a single alignment, so the table maps the pantheon of Ch.07 onto the Law–Neutrality–Chaos axis; where a Salorras Paragon class exists, it is the signature path for that god’s holy elite.

Deity (Ch.07)Aspects / portfolioAlignmentParagon
Eone — the Lightbringerarts, courage, duty, elves, justice, life, natureLawWarrior of Eone

Galiena — Princess of Wealthcommerce, money, negotiation, trade, wealthNeutrality
Thoraldor — Father of Dwarvescreation, dwarves, forges, law, metalcraft, protectionLaw

Aalokye (Ominous Three)bravery, healing, fortune, prosperityLawOmenar — Healing
Othrax (Ominous Three)time, arcane magic, paradox, duskNeutralityOmenar — Time

B/X Law is order and hierarchy, not goodness — Adorys, tyrant of rule and mastery, stands under Law beside Eone and Thoraldor, however different their creeds. Apostles of the chaotic gods serve dark purposes; the referee may permit them to command undead using the turning table rather than repel them.

Paragon Classes (the apostle’s elite holy traditions)

The holy Paragons of Salorras are standalone OSE classes; a player who wants one plays it from 1st level, the order’s consecration part of the character’s story:

  • Warrior of Eone — holy warrior of Eone the Lightbringer; radiant martial smiter and shield of the innocent.
  • Murder-Call Apostle — assassin-priest of Nerkan Thak’Ar, god of Murder; sacred killing, deception, and the fatal strike.
  • Magewraith — shadow-cleric of Kaith’otl, Keeper of Myths; oracular knowledge fused with the entropic magic of the Pale Thread.
  • Omenar — oracle of the Ominous Three (the Threefold Testament); foresight and fate through one chosen face — Domination (Adorys), Healing (Aalokye), or Time (Othrax).
