This fiery creature looks like a slender human, with wider and slightly larger hands. Its opaque body ignites from inside, and jets of fire erupt at random, setting its skin’s color from deep red to ultraviolet. Its eye sockets are empty and torrid, while the rest of its facial features are sleek and smoky. It has two large clawed hands, but most dangerous are the two scythe-like stings that extend from its back.

Pyrearchons are powerful inhabitants of the Continuum of Ylaana. They are beings made from the ashes of vanished phoenixes, and they carry the gift of fire and magic. Eternal watchers of Salorras, they wait for the moment they will be given the chance to “cleanse” the greedy wielders of entropic magic — for it is said that with its use the Continuum Dysis, where all the spells of the world are woven before mages call them, “frays” ever more. Many inhabitants of Salorras, especially the pyrekin, reckon these creatures the angelic punishers of the goddess Orya.

The physical features of pyrearchons resemble those of a slender human, though their actual size differs according to their power. They have semi-transparent, burning skin and a featureless face — save for two flaming eye sockets — with clawed hands and two scythe-stings rising from the back. Their caustic nature thins the oxygen in a space, leaving a smell of sulfur. The body size of young pyrearchons is about 1.70 meters tall and 75 kilos, while the most ancient can reach 4.70 meters and 1.5 tons.

Pyrearchons are charismatic, intelligent beings, with a wisdom grounded in magic. The chaotic nature of fire makes them especially unpredictable existences. Even so, the quintessence of the phoenix has passed into these beings the feeling of mercy to a significant degree; they often have good intentions, but if their patience runs out, they may react violently, even against an ally. Pyrearchons speak the tongue of fire and the tongue of the wind, as well as the ancient dragon-speech, though the oldest and wisest of their kind may know any tongue.

Combat

Pyrearchons keep a safe distance from their enemy, avoiding melee. They use their torrid gaze to blind possible spellcasters, and strike heavily-armored warriors with spell-like abilities. Even so, they are highly capable creatures in melee as well. A pyrearchon’s natural weapons are treated as magic for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Burst (Su): A pyrearchon’s hands are engulfed in fire. A successful hit by a pyrearchon’s claw bursts in a fire explosion that deals fire damage to its target, in addition to the physical damage. The amount of fire damage depends on the pyrearchon’s Hit Dice, as indicated on the table below. If a pyrearchon hits itself, this ability does not take effect.

HDFire Damage
1–41d6
5–92d6
10–143d6
15–194d6
20–345d6 to 8d6

Poison (Ex): Sting—injury; save Fortitude DC 10 + 1/2 the pyrearchon’s HD + the pyrearchon’s Charisma modifier; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1d4 Strength damage; cure 2 consecutive saves. The save DC is Charisma-based. The sting of a pyrearchon injects a poison that may boil the victim’s blood (or fluids) and cripple its muscles.

Spell-Like Abilities: A pyrearchon with a Charisma score of 10 or higher has three or more spell-like abilities, depending on its Hit Dice, as indicated on the table below. The abilities are cumulative; a 4-HD pyrearchon can use acid splash, burning hands, and detect magic as well as mage armor and scorching ray. Unless otherwise noted, an ability is usable once per day. Caster level equals the pyrearchon’s HD, and the save DC is 10 + 1/2 the pyrearchon’s HD + the pyrearchon’s Charisma modifier.

HDAbilities
1–3At will—acid splash, burning hands, detect magic
4–5Mage armor, scorching ray 3/day
6–7See invisibility, fireball 3/day
8–9Haste, wall of fire 3/day
10–11Dimension door, break enchantment
12–13Teleport, contingency, empowered fireball 3/day*
14–15True seeing, prismatic spray, quickened haste*
16–17Plane shift, sunburst 3/day
18–19Incendiary cloud, meteor swarm, quickened teleport*
20+Empowered prismatic spray*, 1/week—wish

*These abilities are not cumulative with abilities of the same spell type. They are the same abilities, enhanced with a metamagic feat. For example, a 12-HD pyrearchon has the empowered fireball 3/day ability, but no uses of the plain fireball ability given at 6–7 HD.

Torrid Gaze (Su): Blinds the target temporarily, 30 feet, Fortitude DC 10 + 1/2 the pyrearchon’s HD + the pyrearchon’s Charisma modifier (max 25) negates. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Ardent Health (Ex): A pyrearchon uses its Charisma modifier instead of its Constitution modifier for all Constitution-based statistics, skills, and saving throws.

Burn Off (Ex): When a pyrearchon slays a living opponent, it can burn off the victim’s flesh and life force in ten minutes. Burned-off victims cannot be raised or resurrected; there is a 50% chance that a miracle, true resurrection, or wish spell can restore a burned-off victim to life (check once for each destroyed creature, and if the check fails, the creature cannot be brought back to life by mortal magic).

A pyrearchon advances in Hit Dice by burning off slain opponents in this fashion. For every five suitable corpses a pyrearchon burns off, it gains 1 Hit Die, and all its ability scores increase by +1/2 (plus +1 to Charisma per 3 HD). Its special abilities advance as written in their descriptions; its ability scores, attack bonus, and saves improve as normal for an outsider of its Hit Dice; and it gains skill ranks and feats normally. Its size also increases as indicated on the table below. A pyrearchon only advances by burning off the corpses of creatures whose Hit Dice or levels are equal to or greater than its own current total. A pyrearchon that reaches 8 Hit Dice, or 16 Hit Dice, is considered a great or an elite pyrearchon respectively, upon completion of the act. An elite pyrearchon can reach a maximum of 34 Hit Dice through burning off slain opponents.

HDSize
1–9Medium
10–18Large
19–34Huge

Damage Reduction (Ex): All pyrearchons have damage reduction /magic and evil equal to their HD total (maximum 20).

Death Throes (Su): When slain, a pyrearchon explodes in a blinding burst of fire that deals 1d6 points of fire damage per pyrearchon HD to anything within 20 feet (Reflex DC 10 + 1/2 the pyrearchon’s HD + the pyrearchon’s Charisma modifier, half). The DC is Charisma-based.

Heat (Ex): A pyrearchon generates so much heat that merely touching it deals 1d6 points of fire damage to the toucher. A pyrearchon can suppress or resume this ability as a free action.

Healing Fire (Su): Any fire attack that would normally deal damage instead heals a pyrearchon. Any fire effect targeted on a pyrearchon heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points it would otherwise deal. A pyrearchon cannot exceed its full normal hit points through this ability.

Fast Healing (Ex): Each round, a pyrearchon heals damage equal to half its HD total (maximum 15).

Outsider Traits: A pyrearchon cannot be raised, reincarnated, or resurrected (though a limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection spell can restore life). It has darkvision out to 60 feet and is proficient with all simple and martial weapons and all armor. An armed pyrearchon always wields and/or wears magical arms according to its HD: 1–4 HD, +1 arms; 5–9 HD, +2 arms; 10–14 HD, +3 arms; 15–19 HD, +4 arms; 20–34 HD, +5 arms. Pyrearchons do not need to breathe, eat, or sleep, and their fiery existence does not depend on oxygen (though they burn it). A slain pyrearchon on the Material Plane returns to its home Continuum, including any arms and gear.

Primal Existence (Ex): Pyrearchons are beings created by primal fire and magic, and their physiology is alien and distant even to other outsiders. They are not subject to critical hits or precision-based extra damage (such as sneak attack), and they are immune to disease, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.

Spell Resistance (Ex): All pyrearchons have spell resistance equal to 11 + the pyrearchon’s HD total (maximum 36).
